The Maker Movement

What is the Maker Movement?

There was a time in our history when handmade craftsmanship carried its own value. People contributed to their communities as weavers, carvers, growers, brewers and more. Goods were made and bartered with, and pride of usefulness mattered. With the industrial age, goods were able to be made faster and more cheaply. As a result, the way people valued themselves declined.

Now, with the recent economic downturn and the growing concern about environmental sustainability, we are embracing a new age of commerce—the Maker Movement.

Constructivism in a social environment

According to Wikipedia, the “‘Maker Culture’ emphasizes learning-through-doing (constructivism) in a social environment. Maker culture emphasizes informal, networked, peer-led, and shared learning motivated by fun and self-fulfillment.”

Remembering the thrill of handmade projects

We started Let’s Make It in this spirit. As a society, we are moving away from mass production to genuine appreciation of unique, one-of-a kind items. We are passionate about learning, building community and respecting the environment. Re-purposing everyday items helps us keep items out of the landfills. Learning new skills helps adults remember the thrill of handmade projects, and carries forward our in-born drive to create with our own hands.
